CONGRATULATIONS SJSU!

Congratulations SJSU! On behalf of Akbayan I would like to thank everyone who came out this weekend during Frienship Games and gave it their heart! A lot of unity, hard work, dedication, and team work made this event both successful and rewarding. We had our obstacles and some troubles along the path but with the right mindset we were able to achieve something greater! SPUF MASTERS 09′!

Hello everyone! This week is a very important week for Akbayan and definitely for all of us. Filipino American History Month isn’t over yet, so let’s keep on celebrating and embracing our Pilipino culture and history.

THEME
This week at the table, come and learn about important historical moments that have happened throughout the history pertaining to Pilipinos. Please stop by when and if you can! Check out all the things that you can learn about the People’s Power Revolution, the Veteranos, Candlelight Vigil, and much more!

GENERAL MEETING
We all know that by this time, a lot of you will be packing up for Friendship Games, but we would love for you to all and come out to our third general meeting of this semester! This will be a great way for you all to learn something new and even have some fun along the way.

Hell week is now in session for Friendship Games! Hope that you all prepared for this day, October 24, 2009. Hello everyone! This weekend was great. On behalf of Akbayan I would like to thank everyone who came out to our events this weekend and supported us. On Thursday, October 1 we had our annual Ma’Boo’Hay showcase and on Saturday, October 3, a bunch of us went up to Westborough park in San Francisco for the Nor Cal Picnic. Hey everyone! September just flew by like nothing, huh? It is now October, which means that it’s time to celebrate Pilipino American History Month. Our culture is very important, and this month would be a perfect opportunity for all of you to learn about Pilipino history, current events, and even more.Akbayan has a lot planned for all of you for this special month, so let’s begin!

Every week of the month, the Akbayan table will have a different theme that include activities, which will help all of you learn about different aspects of the Pilipino culture. What we ask the members to do is come by the table and participate in these small activities that will help you learn little facts related to the Pilipinos. Members will have to check in with us, and if any of you members come out to the table 2 out of the 4 days during the week, you will get a surprise prize at the end!

* OCTOBER 5-8,2009: This week will be all about Pilipino Entertainment. You will all get to learn small facts about famous past and present Pilipino entertainers, movies, music, and other things pertaining to this theme

Had fun at the first general meeting two weeks ago? Well, there will be an upcoming one this week, and be prepared to learn about things you probably don’t even know about!

KAAMP
If you didn’t already know, KAAMP revealing week has been postponed to next week. So, adings you will not be able to find out who your Kuya/Ates are until then.

TYPHOON ONDOY RELIEF DONATIONS
We are still taking donations (clothes, shoes, blankets, monetary, etc) at the Akbayan table. There are many options of how we’re going to get all these donations to the Philippines, and currently Akbayan is teaming up with 1801 (http://www.myspace.com/1801ministires) to make all of this happen. We appreciate all of those that have already donated to this cause, and please keep them coming. This is a great opportunity for you to help out those affected by this disaster back home. Thank you.

K.A.A.M.P/Intern Info Night(September 22, 2009)
Don’t know what to do on this upcoming furlough day? Well, KAAMP/Intern Info Night is the place to be! If you’re interested in either becoming an intern for our organization or even a Kuya/Ate/Ading for Akbayan’s very own “Kuya, Ate, Ading Mentoring Program,” you must attend this info night to know what these programs are all about and what is going to be planned for this year.

Guess what? Our general meetings start this Thursday! Come and learn about what we plan to teach you about the Pilipino culture. Also, we will be discussing updates and important notes that you should all know.

Love wings? Well after Akbayan’s First General meeting come by SmokeEaters and enjoy some chicken and wings while supporting Akbayan. A flier must be present at the time of purchase so make sure to print one out or grab one at the Akbayan table!

Ma’BOO’hay Talent Showcase (October 1, 2009)
To kick of Pilipino History Month, which is October, Akbayan will be hosting its 9th Annual Ma’BOO’hay talent showcase featuring different Fil-Am artists from around the area. The show will be provided with a variety of different types of performances from singing, dancing, rapping, and comic acts. This year our line up consists of Meron 6, Rad Reyes, SJSU Breakers, Herb Diggs, AK, and AM Kidd. Headling for Ma’BOO’hay will be GLP (Gabe Bondoc, Leejay, Passion), Drop N Harmony, and AJ Rafael. Come out and enjoy a fun show that will blow your minds away!

• Cost: Presale-$13.00, At the Door-$15.00

Friendship Games Updates

FRIENDSHIP GAMES PRACTICES
Ready for game time? Games practices begin Monday, September 21, 2009. For those who are interested in playing games for friendship games, you must come out to these practices in order to be involved in it. Be prepared for a fun filled, but also intense practice! IMPORTANT NOTE: YOU MUST TURN IN A SIGNED WAIVER FORM AND REGISTRATION BEFORE PARTICIPATING IN THESE PRACTICES. NO FORMS, NO PRACTICE.
• Location: Meet on the fields in front of Tower Hall before 4:30PM. We will all be heading to the field located on Market Street.
• Time: 4:30PM-6:30PM

 
FRIENDSHIP GAMES ROLL CALL
Interested in doing roll call this year or just want to see what it’s actually all about? Practices will be begin this week on Wednesday, September 23, 2009. The AK coordinators (Randy Le, Alan Manosca, Roger Aquino, and Pam Cedeno) will be leading these practices. It is very important for those of you who want to be involved in this part of friendship games to attend since practices are only once a week.
• Location: Studio A located on the bottom floor in the event center (gym)
• Time: 8:00PM-10:00PM

 
FRIENDSHIP GAMES SPUF
We will be needing a lot of people to help out on this aspect! If you plan on coming to any SPUF days, please bring cardboard if you can. SPUFing will usually happen on the weekends starting on Friday. Interested in helping us out? Contact any of the officers, or specifically Jessica Altura, the social chair, or come by the Akbayan table if you have any further questions about where and when this will take place.

IMPORTANT NOTES
-Please turn in your registration form/waiver form ASAP
-October 1, 2009 is the last day to turn in $30.00 registration fee. After that date, registration fee will increase to $35, then $40 on October 10, 2009. DO NOT LAG.

Welcome Back!

We hope everyone had a great summer! Now it’s time to get back to business with a new school year ahead of us. This year is going to be a blast for members past and present. If you want to learn more what’s in store for this year come by the table (TABLE 4 in front of the Student Union).
