Guess what?
Spring Semester 2010 is starting soon, and Akbayan can not wait to show what we have in store for all of you! Trust us, it’s going to be an exciting time, but before quickly jumping into the new semester there are a few opportunities that any of you can take part in, and here they are:

Internship Program
Yes, Akbayan’s internship program will still be open to interested members, but we will only be taking in a limited amount, so don’t miss out! For the first time in Akbayan’s internship history, there will be an internship orientation held before the start of the semester. Come learn about what the internship program has to offer by meeting the internship coordinator and also O.N.E Cab officers. You will also be able to participate in workshops and learn about important campus resources!

Akbayan Member T-Shirt Design Contest
The look out for the new Akbayan Member T-Shirt Design is still out there, and anyone can send in a design. There are no boundaries as to what you can do!!! Just turn your design in to akbayan_tshirt@ yahoo.com by February 1st! Votes will be done by Akbayan members! **CHANGE PROCESS OF VOTING***Instead of an online poll, Akbayan members will be able to vote at the Akbayan table and/or at Open House. There can only be one vote per member.

SPEAKOUT! AKBAYAN’S FIRST OPEN MIC NIGHT

Our brothers and sisters need our help, and what better way then to come together and speak out about contemporary issues that are affecting our kaibigans. WINTER FORMAL: Miss dressing up like how you did for prom? Well, Akbayan’s annual Winter Formal will be coming up in December and announcements about ticket prices, the theme, and everything else about it are to be announced very soon. Exciting, isn’t it?!

COMMUNITY ASPECTS
AKBAYAN’S FIRST OPEN MIC NIGHT: Calling all members of SJSU’s bayanihan: If you write songs, perform spoken word, write prose, or just like to be on stage Akbayan wants you for their first ever Open Mic Night. Use this time to shed light on contemporary issues that hits close to your heart. Our kaibigans in the Philippines have suffered through multiple typhoons and we’re going to use this night to bring our attention back to them. The Showcase is free but we’ll be accepting monetary donations toward typhoon relief victims. Give from your heart as you witness others perform from their heart. If you wish to perform for the showcase please contact Angelou Tagal at (650)302-9822 or angeloult@gmail.com or sign up at Akbayan’s Table outside the Student Union until November 16th. We’ll see you there!

GENERAL MEMBER SCHOLARHIP
Applications are out for any Akbayan General Member Scholarship! We know that every penny counts when it comes to paying for your college education, so it wouldn’t hurt to fill out this application, which could help pay off some of either your college debt or text books. All the information you need about it will be on the application, which could be picked up at the Akbayan table in front of the Student Union. We will be out there all week, so don’t be afraid to grab one for yourself, or a few of your friends, but only ONE will be chosen out of the applicants. *Akbayan interns and cabinet members are excluded*

 

KAAMP
Thanksgiving isn’t too far from now, and it’s that time of year to celebrate this special holiday with Akbayan’s annual KAAMP Thanksgiving Dinner. This will be a great time to bond with Akbayan general members, KAAMP families, and most importantly with your Kuya/Ate/Ading. Enjoy some great food and company on this very important day! Most importantly, get ready and excited for the yummy turkey! *NOTE: This is a potluck. Please bring a main dish (i.e. eggrolls, rice, mashed potatoes, chicken, sandwiches, pasta, etc). If you do not bring food, you will not get food. Thank you!

Congratulations SJSU! On behalf of Akbayan I would like to thank everyone who came out this weekend during Frienship Games and gave it their heart! A lot of unity, hard work, dedication, and team work made this event both successful and rewarding. We had our obstacles and some troubles along the path but with the right mindset we were able to achieve something greater! SPUF MASTERS 09′!

Weekly Updates

Hello everyone! This week is a very important week for Akbayan and definitely for all of us. Filipino American History Month isn’t over yet, so let’s keep on celebrating and embracing our Pilipino culture and history.

THEME
This week at the table, come and learn about important historical moments that have happened throughout the history pertaining to Pilipinos. Please stop by when and if you can! Check out all the things that you can learn about the People’s Power Revolution, the Veteranos, Candlelight Vigil, and much more!

GENERAL MEETING
We all know that by this time, a lot of you will be packing up for Friendship Games, but we would love for you to all and come out to our third general meeting of this semester! This will be a great way for you all to learn something new and even have some fun along the way.

Hello everyone! This weekend was great. On behalf of Akbayan I would like to thank everyone who came out to our events this weekend and supported us. On Thursday, October 1 we had our annual Ma’Boo’Hay showcase and on Saturday, October 3, a bunch of us went up to Westborough park in San Francisco for the Nor Cal Picnic. Hey everyone! September just flew by like nothing, huh? It is now October, which means that it’s time to celebrate Pilipino American History Month. Our culture is very important, and this month would be a perfect opportunity for all of you to learn about Pilipino history, current events, and even more.Akbayan has a lot planned for all of you for this special month, so let’s begin!

Every week of the month, the Akbayan table will have a different theme that include activities, which will help all of you learn about different aspects of the Pilipino culture. What we ask the members to do is come by the table and participate in these small activities that will help you learn little facts related to the Pilipinos. Members will have to check in with us, and if any of you members come out to the table 2 out of the 4 days during the week, you will get a surprise prize at the end!

* OCTOBER 5-8,2009: This week will be all about Pilipino Entertainment. You will all get to learn small facts about famous past and present Pilipino entertainers, movies, music, and other things pertaining to this theme

Had fun at the first general meeting two weeks ago? Well, there will be an upcoming one this week, and be prepared to learn about things you probably don’t even know about!

KAAMP
If you didn’t already know, KAAMP revealing week has been postponed to next week. So, adings you will not be able to find out who your Kuya/Ates are until then.

TYPHOON ONDOY RELIEF DONATIONS
We are still taking donations (clothes, shoes, blankets, monetary, etc) at the Akbayan table. There are many options of how we’re going to get all these donations to the Philippines, and currently Akbayan is teaming up with 1801 (http://www.myspace.com/1801ministires) to make all of this happen. We appreciate all of those that have already donated to this cause, and please keep them coming. This is a great opportunity for you to help out those affected by this disaster back home. Thank you.
